The emergence of city bike rental is boosting the city specific use product as it demand strong and reliable parts for the bikes sleeping outside most of the year.
Just french market alone is a huge business potential with the thousands of Velib (Paris city and Lyon bike rental services).
Hutchinson, the french tire company is capitalizing on this growing niche with the introduction of a 100% flat free tire/inner tube concept.
It can be mounted on a "normal" clincher type rim not wider than 19mm (Rim inner width).
How does Hutchinson Serenity work?
The normal inner tube has been replaced by a solid Hutchinson insert. The insert offers the same performance as a normal air tube. This “solid” tube is used with a specially beaded Urban Tour + tire that prevent the tire coming off the rim. It’s a tire that is well suited to any urban conditions or pavement.
The Hutchinson Serenity distinguishes itself from all other “solid” type airless tires by its smooth and comfortable ride as well as a more efficient rolling resistance than other tires of this type.
The Serenity is available in the size 20, 24, 26x1.50, 700x35c. The use of an inner tube is forbidden as it has to be fitted with the insert. This new tire concept has a durability of 5,000 kilometres for the tyre and 10,000 kilometres for the insert.
In my opinion, 26x1.50 is a little bit small for "comfortable" city ride. It would be interesting to know to which tire pressure is it equivalent or the rider weight limit if any.
I will update with more infos as time goes by and tires rolls around city streets.
